How To Keep Your Dog Healthy & Happy This Summer

June 22, 2019

It’s that time of the year again, summer is upon us! With the weather warming up and everyone spending more and more time outdoors, its natural we want to share the fun with our four-legged friends.

Whilst of course sharing our summer activities with our dogs is super fun, its important to keep in mind the hot weather can be dangerous for them.

In our first ever blog we discuss the key points to help keep your dog happy and healthy this summer…

Access to fresh drinking water and shade

Its so important your dog has access to fresh water and a nice cool spot in the shade. Although dogs do enjoy sun bathing, they can over heat fairly quickly and they have no way of cooling down other than drinking water and panting. This one is a MUST.

Never leave your dog alone in a hot car

It can only take minutes for the effects of a hot car to be lethal for your dog. We strongly advise never leaving your dog alone in the car (even with the window down), as the car temperature rises rapidly in the heat. Even with a car parked in the shade, temperatures can reach 90 degrees and a car parked in direct sunlight can rise to 160 degrees.

Look after your dog’s paws

A hot floor surface will not only burn your dogs paws but also cause a dramatic increase in body temperature. An easy test for all dog owners is to check ground temperature by hand, and if unable to keep palm flat on the ground for 3 seconds, it will most likely be too hot for your dog.

When it comes to paw care, we offer a completely natural paw balm, which is ideal for sore paws as it both moisturises and soothes the most cracked of paws. We advise applying our paw balm on a weekly basis, regardless of paw condition as the best type of cure is always prevention. Our product is completely cruelty free and was is made in the Peak District. Our product offers year round protection, come wind, rain or shine!

Protect your dog from Allergies

Parasites such as mosquitoes, fleas and ticks all carry parasites which puts your dog at risk for heartworm and lyme disease, just to list two diseases.

More commonly than the above, dogs are very prone to allergies – especially in the summer months when spending more time outside. To combat this, we recommend using an antioxidant such as our Allergy aid soft chews. Our soft chews have proven very popular with our clients, as dogs think of them as a treat. Benefits include:

  • Effective relief for seasonal allergies.
  • All round health, skin and coat support.
  • Respiratory functions support.
  • Improved natural defences from infection and disease.
